In 2004, Father Pat Stephenson and Michael Schneiders, after spending time with the poverty
stricken boys and girls living in the streets of Nairobi, started the Cardinal Maurice Otunga
Empowerment Center For Street Girls. The center is located in the neighboring town of Karen,
Kenya.
The support of this center has now become the major world community outreach project for Holy
Family Parish.
The young teenage girls that Father Pat and Michael met are at high risk for contracting and
spreading HIV and AIDS. Many of them lived a life of prostitution at the early age of twelve in an
attempt to help support their families. HIV and AIDS in Kenya are devastating. Today, Kenya is
trying to support 2,000,000 orphans mainly because of deaths from HIV and AIDS.
The center opened in 2004 with 15 girls. Today the center houses 91 girls. These girls are out
of the slums of Korogocho and Kibera and now living in a safe and nurturing environment.
All the girls that come to the center are at risk girls, some have HIV some do not. Most have
lived a life of being raped and beaten. They are invited to the center by social workers that meet
the girls in local hospitals or neighborhood clinics.
They enroll in a two year program where they are educated and taught a trade so when their
two years are complete they are ready to step back into the community and either continue with
their education or apply their newly learned trade and become self sufficient.
Your donation will help feed, house and educate these girls.
